  • Baja 260 sport 7.4 merc gear noise

I have a noise that comes from the back of my engine area. It sounds like a gear trying to engage but just keeps riding the teeth. The engine runs fine. I thought it was maybe my water pump grenading but i took off the belts and started it and noise still there, its like the tic tic tic as a motor goes into gear but is more random and keeps going after the boat is in any gear. it even happens in neutral. The noise rises and falls with RPM. My son has taken to putting up rooster tails with our new proper so I know the boat has been pushed with the motor trimmed up.

Any ideas? gear shift linkage? the prop spins freely in neutral.

    thanks for any help

U-joints on drive shaft could be bad after trimming way up and running hard.

Ended up being a broken connector rod. new motor installed. stuck with the peanut heads and block but went 40 over and good internals
